Mermaid SLA Printing Project
For this individual project we were instructed to design a 5x5x7 cm sculpture that will be 3D printed using Stereolithography (SLA) printing and had to be "breathtaking". The sculpture I designed depicts a mermaid trapped inside a tank filled with water and is peeking out from the surface. I first 3D modeled the mermaid using blender and the Boolean tool to create the mermaid-shaped cavity in a rectangular block. Using clear resin and taking advantage of the benefits of SLA printing, I was able to achieve almost complete transparency in the material that was printed (Surrounding water and the head of the mermaid) and achieve a clouded look in the inside cavity, creating the outline of the mermaid's body. I also designed the sculpture to be able to be printed without any supports so that it won't create any inner defects and break the immersion.
